Ask Amy: Deep division leaves spouse in the middle

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 04:28:46 GMT

Dear Amy: My spouse and a close friend of ours recently had a heated and deep argument. This involved philosophic and even theological differences, which had never before been revealed. This unresolved conflict left my spouse unwilling to discuss the subject any further, and our friend hurt and dismayed at the lack of willingness on my spouse’s part for a continued debate on the issue.I am feeling caught in the middle.I am trying hard to stay neutral because both people are important to me. Obviously, I am loyal and supportive to my spouse. However, over the years, I have also become a close confidant to our friend. At this point, my spouse just wants to move on. But our friend, who we see often, is obviously hurting and feeling betrayed. That said, as of late, my neutrality has started to feel forced and uncomfortable.Do I say something to my friend to try to assuage the problem, and yet be disloyal to my spouse?Or do I remain neutral and risk losing a good friend?— Trying to be ...

“You and Wendy might get along if you knew her better,” I told Cy the Cynic in the club lounge. “You should keep asking her out.”Wendy, our resident feminist, and Cy are relentless adversaries, even when – and especially when – they cut as partners in our penny game.“The last time I tried,” Cy shrugged, “she said she couldn’t go because her third cousin was coming to visit.”“That’s better than when she told you she had to check the freshness dates on the dairy products in her fridge,” I sighed.Wendy and Cy were today’s East-West, and against four spades Cy led his singleton heart. Wendy took the ace and returned the queen, and Cy ruffed declarer’s king with his four of trumps. The Cynic next led a club, and South won with the jack and led a trump. Cy took his ace and led another club, but South won and cashed the king of trumps, dropping Wendy’s queen. South then ran the diamonds, discarding his last heart, and claimed.“Thank you, partner,” Wendy growled. R...

The deal to release hostages kidnapped by Hamas during its terrorist attack on Israel now only depends on “minor” practical issues, the Qatari prime minister said on Sunday in Doha. His comments came after the White House denied that an agreement had been reached, following a report by the Washington Post that Hamas was close to agreeing to free 50 hostages in exchange for a five-day pause in fighting from Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also denied that a deal had been reached.“The challenges facing the agreement are just practical and logistical,” Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani told a press conference in Doha, alongside the EU’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell. Negotiations toward an agreement have seen “ups and downs from time to time throughout the last few weeks,” he said. “I’m now more confident that we are close enough to reach a deal that can bring the peopl...

Good morning! We’re waking up to a cold start. Check out that 24-hour temperature change as of 7 am!We have a lot of sunshine to start the day. There’s a cold front to our north that will drop in later today. That’ll bring us some more clouds and some of us a chance for a spot shower. Most of us stay dry. This will reinforce the chilly air as temperatures will be cold tonight and stay about ten degrees below average tomorrow!Today, highs are in the upper 40s/low 50s. A wind out of the west will be gusty and make it feel chillier.Sunny, but chilly with a lingering breeze Monday. Tuesday we’ll see increasing cloud cover ahead of an area of low pressure that could delay holiday travel come Wednesday. The wet weather starts as a mix for the higher elevations, with rain and wind especially for the morning/early afternoon. Thanksgiving will be chilly and breezy!-Meteorologist Melanie Black
